British spokesman calls for ending Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories
Palestine-UK, Politics, 7/18/2002
The spokesman for the British government Gerard Russell has called on Israel to end its occupation of the Palestinian territories, stressing that the concept of force, used by the Israeli forces will not solve the problem.
In a statement to the Lebanese daily al-Mustaqbal (the future) issued on Wednesday, the spokesman denounced the building of the Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories, noting that his country consider these settlements as illegal and a bulwark in the road to peace.
He explained that the European role in the region is built on inviting the Israeli and Palestinian sides to return back to the political track.
The British spokesman indicated that the European Union provides financial aid to help the deteriorated condition of the Palestinian people especially at the economic level.
Russell, on the other hand, said that his country will not change the regime in Baghdad, noting Britain did not take a decision concerning the attack against Iraq.
