Lebanon: Hilton hotel blown up for rebuilding
Lebanon, Business, 7/15/2002
The Hilton hotel in the downtown of Beirut was blown up on Sunday morning. It was greatly damaged by the Lebanese civil war and great losses inflicted on it as a result.
The blowing up operation was carried out by an American company specialized in demolishing buildings in an engineered way that limits the damages to the targeted building only avoiding nearby buildings.
The hotel's owner company intends to rebuild the hotel with a new design and that will be following the removal of the remains and relics resulted from demolishing 22 floors of 26,000 tons of iron- steel and cement destroyed by 300 kg of explosives.
Worthy mentioning that the Hilton hotel which was completed in 1975 was not inaugurated because of the war.
