No Israeli water projects in Nile Basin
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 7/13/2002

Egypt's Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Mahmoud Abu-Zeid said to Alexandria University students that Nile Water would not be sold.

The minister is studying means to receive back the costs of the new water projects chrough involvement of water users and financial support in running the water projects.

Abu-Zeid added that there were joint projects between Egypt and other Nile Basin countries to reduce the waste of Nile water.

Egypt succeeded to surmount the Israeli obstacles to reduce the Nile Water quota of Egypt, said the Minister adding it was proved there was no Israeli water projects in the Nile Basin member-states.

There are no Israeli dams on the River Nile and Nile water will not be used by other than Nile Basin member states.

Abu Zeid was speaking to Alexandria University students and teaching staff in their summer camp.

The minister highlighted that the High Dam is the "Soul of Egypt" and it was not acceptable to be in danger. Some Israelis such as Knesset member Lieberman had in the past called for striking at the Aswan High Dam by the Israeli air force and attacking the vital Egyptian installation.

Highest standards of safety and security were provided for the High Dam, illustrated Abu Zeid, saying any endeavor to put it in danger would end in vain.

Only the insane would try to put a threat on it, he concluded.
