Morocco, Local, 7/13/2002
Over one hundred artists, singers, dancers and horse-riders from various Moroccan cities and villages have been invited to participate in the festivities marking the wedding of HM King Mohammed VI to HRH Lalla Salma, in a perfect display of Morocco's traditional arts.
Each region has picked up the best of its art, the best horses and the most talented horse-riders to participate in the traditional ceremony of Lahdyia (ritual of gifts offering), a joyful and festive procession that starts the festivities which promise to be a genuine festival of sounds and colors.
Friday, at sunset, a long procession will head towards the Ahl Fass mosque in the esplanade of the Royal Palace in Rabat. The procession, carrying lavishly decorated big plates and baskets containing gifts to the bride, will cross avenues and streets that have been repainted, embellished, and ornamented with flags, banners and decorative lightings. Moroccans from all regions will either be viewing directly or watching on TV this beautiful procession.
Before this pedestrian parade, the atmosphere would have been warmed up by equestrian shows, known as fantasia, performed by the most talented horse-riders.
Later in the evening, inhabitants and visitors of Rabat can stay up late in the night listening at various music bands. Large fireworks will enlighten the skies of Rabat to signal the end of the first day of celebrations.
