Morocco, Local, 7/13/2002
On the occasion of the marriage of Morocco's King Mohammed VI to Her Royal Highness Lalla Salma, the sovereign has granted free pardon to hundreds of inmates. The sovereign ordered to free 8,425 prisoners, including 1.080 who are sick, elderly, handicapped or pregnant women. The grace also included prison terms reductions for 42,661 inmates, of whom 1,887 prisoners are sick, old, handicapped or pregnant or breast-feeding women. Two detainees had their life-prison sentence commuted to a 30-year prison sentence.
A statement read out Thursday night at the Moroccan TV by justice minister, Omar Azziman, says the king wants to associate all categories of his people to the festive events and joy marking the happy event of his wedding.
