The board council of the Institut du Monde Arabe (Arab World Institute) in Paris elected ambassador Denis Bauchard as its chairman and thereby replacing Camille Cabana, the institute's former President who died on June 2.

The new chairman of the institute is a remarkable diplomatic figure. His selection to this post for which he was nominated by the French foreign ministry is because of his deep knowledge in the Arab world and because of his closeness to the French President Jacques Chirac, as Bauchard was the director of Chirac's office when the latter was a secretary of state in the government of George Bombedeau.

The board's council also elected its bureau which is composed of, in addition to its president Bauchard two deputies for the presidents. They are the Moroccan ambassador to France, Hassan Abu Ayoub and Rene Allen, French foreign ambassador to Lebanon and of two members.

Bauchard's first mission as the head of the institute is to face the critical financial crisis which affects this French- Arab cultural foundation which is the first of its kind in the world.

Meantime, the institute said it is holding a "Euro-Arab Conference for the Dialogue of Cultures For Living Together Based on a Better Knowledge of the Other" on July 15-16.
