King Mohammed receives World Bank president
Morocco, Economics, 7/12/2002

Morocco's King Mohammed VI received this Thursday at the Royal office in Rabat president of the World Bank, James Wolfesohn, who started on Wednesday a visit to Morocco.

During the meeting that reviewed the objectives set by Morocco to expand growth and speed its pace, the sovereign underscored the coherence and ambition of the overall project set forth by Morocco in the political, economic and social fields

"Re-launching our economy and stabilizing this reactivation as part of a sustainable development strategy are the automatic results of our economic and social choices," said the sovereign who stressed political gains reached by Morocco should, henceforth, be a major engine to give to our economic renewal its best chances of success.

This is, the sovereign went on, a structural and deep long-term drive based on Morocco's resolve to safeguard its macro-economic gains that constitute Morocco's best asset to consolidate and extend the foundations of its growth.

The king concluded by praising the quality and permanence of cooperation between Morocco and the World Bank and expressing thanks to Wolfensohn for his personal and continuous involvement on the side of Morocco.

On his part, the WB president agreed with the king's remarks regarding Morocco's capacity to build up economic progress on the political results scored and hailed the action that the sovereign has been conducting for three years. "Your action is profitable for the Moroccan people. It is likewise important for all the countries of the region."

Wolfensohn also voiced satisfaction at the social priorities set by Morocco on its agenda, recalling that the World Bank made of the fight against poverty in the world the basis and the reference of its international strategy. He also expressed the bank's readiness to contribute to the achievement of the goals set by Morocco and consolidate its cooperation with the Kingdom.

Wolfensohn also put forward some concrete projects for a coordinated action with Morocco, as part of a long-term strategy focusing on precise targets to serve the country's development.

Wolfesohn was accompanied by head of the WB Middle East and North Africa department, Christian Delvoie, and the WB vice-president, Jean-Louis Sarbib, and head of the WB office in Morocco, Olivier Gaudron.

On the Moroccan side, royal advisors, Andre Azoulay and Mohamed Kabbaj, minister of economy, finance, privatization and tourism, Fathallah Oualalou and secretary of state for foreign affairs and cooperation, Taib Fassi Fihri, were present.

The WB president will be meeting several officials, members of non-governmental organizations and private entrepreneurs.
