Annan starts his first visit to Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 7/11/2002

The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Tuesday started his first visit to Sudan during which he will meet with the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

Annan told reporters at the airport where he was welcomed by the Sudanese minister of international cooperation Karam Eddine Abdul Moula and the minister of state for foreign affairs Teijani Saleh that this visit " comes a time when the peace process is witnessing a progress."

Annan's visit comes at the invitation of Khartoum's government and lasts for two days. It deals with the humanitarian aid and peace in Sudan where the war resulted in more than 2 million killings since 1983.

Annan said he had discussed with the President of Kenya Daniel Arab Moi, on the sidelines of the African federation summit in south Africa the peaceful efforts exerted by the government authority for development and fighting desertification ( IGAD) in Sudan.

He continued "I see good indicators for peace in Sudan."

The Kenyan capital has been hosting since June peace negotiations between the representatives of the Sudanese government and the rebels of the People's Army For the Liberation of Sudan." The UN chief announced he will discuss with the Sudanese officials the peace process "and means of facilitating the access of humanitarian aids."
