Mrs. Mubarak takes lead to curb child labour
Egypt, Culture, 7/10/2002
Secretary-General of the National Council for Motherhood and Childhood (NCMC), Ambassadress Moushira Khattab said yesterday that Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak is especially concerned with the issue of child labor, the ill-treatment of working children and the risks and dangers to which they are exposed.
"Mrs. Mubarak was chosen out of ten first ladies to assume a leading role to eliminate the worst forms of child labor," Ambassadress Khattab said at an NCMC meeting yesterday in cooperation with NGOs in the district of Manshiyet Nasser, where a pilot project to address the needs of working children is underway.
Sunday's discussion focused on maximizing the efforts and contributions of each organization in curbing child labour in its worst forms.
"The meeting explored means of encouraging NGOs' participation in the project, and drafted strategies for a fully coordinated implementation of the project," Ambassadress Khattab said.
The meeting dwelt on the importance of improving living standards for limited-income families in order to reduce the incidence of child labour in Manshiyet Nasser, and addressed the problem of children dropping out of school in the district.
