King Mohammed chairs session on development of Tangier-Tetuan region
Morocco, Economics, 7/10/2002
Morocco's King Mohammed VI chaired Monday at the Marchane Palace in Tangier a work session devoted to examining the development program of the Tangier-Tetuan region (northern Morocco) and gave instructions to set up a large economic pole in northern Morocco.
Located at the crossroads of world maritime routes, this new economic pole, to be evolving around a large port on the strait and located near logistic, commercial, industrial and tourist free zones, must be carried out the soonest possible and be operational as of 2007.
This new economic pole, a national project with international dimension, will evidence Morocco's ambition to be an actor and a partner in world economic exchanges. It will endow the northern region and the whole of Morocco with the means to fulfil legitimate ambitions.
The sovereign stressed the special importance granted to the promotion of this region which boasts so many assets and potentials. He renewed Morocco's strategic choice to make of regions a space and an engine for development and voiced conviction that each of the kingdom's regions, brings a valuable richness for the Moroccan nation.
King Mohammed VI inquired about the progress of the ongoing operations and about preparation of programs projected in the short and mid terms. The sovereign stressed the need for a rigorous follow-up, sound management and respect of deadlines set for the completion of all projects or programs.
These programs, the sovereign said, must be part of a comprehensive move meant to endow the region with the economic infrastructure needed by the populations and lay foundations for a lasting economic and social development matching the cultural, geographic and human potentials of these provinces.
The monarch said beyond infrastructures, development and progress have to do, first of all, with will, commitment and determination. After he voiced satisfaction over results scored by several programs in several areas, the sovereign said it was high time to endow the northern region with a large-scale structuring project that matches the region's potentials and the nation's ambitions.
