Moroccan, Runisian comedians denied entry visa to italy for low income
Regional-Italy, Local, 7/9/2002
The Italian Consular Services in Morocco and Tunisia denied Moroccan and Tunisian comedians entry visas to Italy to participate in an international theater festival in Turin on grounds of "low income."
The visa services said these comedians' income is "too low," and is no sufficient guaranty for their return to their home countries after the festival.
Representatives of the Italian Communist Party (PCDI) at the Italian House of Representatives addressed a message of denunciation to President of the Council of Ministers, Silvio Berlusconi.
The party's MPs, led by Gabriella Pistone who is in charge of cultural affairs, said the consular services' decision is a ban on the exchange of culture and ideas, and is a form of discrimination on the basis of revenue."
Festival organizers protested the behavior of the consular services and voiced hope that such shameful discrimination never occur.
