Al-Assad confers with the French foreign minister

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad on Saturday in Damascus received French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin.

The meeting was attended by the deputy premier and foreign minister Farouk al-Shara, French foreign ministry officials and the French Ambassador in Damascus.

Discussions dealt with political conditions. He stressed France's care to deepen friendship relations with Syria and stressed the need on reactivating political work between Syria and France. He also stressed the importance of moving towards just and comprehensive peace according to UN Security Council resolutions 242, and 338 and Madrid conference terms of reference, foremost being the land for peace formula.

President al-Assad stressed the importance of achieving peace in the region and preserving the Arab initiative which was unanimously approved by the Arabs at the recent Beirut's summit and also the importance of the US's preserved credibility in sponsoring the peace process and the need of defining reasons behind the failure of this process, so far.

The French minister stressed his country's support for the development and modernization process in Syria. At the end of the talks, President al-Assad asked the French minister to convey his greetings to President Jacques Chirac.

Earlier in the day, the Syrian foreign minister and his French counterpart discussed in a meeting regional and international issues, especially the tense conditions in the region.

Al- Shara called for an effective European position in order to pressure Israel to abide by the international resolutions. Discussions also dealt with bilateral relations between Syria and France and means of consolidating them in all fields.
