Morocco attends african meeting on fisheries in Abidjan

Morocco took part in the first session of the scientific sub-commission of the center-eastern Atlantic fisheries committee (COPACE), held in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, July 1-4.

The Moroccan delegation made a presentation on cephalopod fishing in southern Morocco and on the new management methods of traditional fishing. The delegation also surveyed Morocco's efforts to promote research on sea resources and to closely follow up sea resources exploitation.

The session that was attended by experts from the 15 African countries member of COPACE and experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommended member countries to conduct pilot studies on the role of traditional fishing in their respective economies and to update data on the migrations of traditional fishermen in the region.

Participants also recommended the carrying out of biological studies on the species living in this part of the Atlantic Ocean and on costs and receipts of traditional fishing to assess the profitability of traditional fishery units.
