Sudan renews al-Nouba mountain agreement with the rebels
Sudan, Politics, 7/6/2002

A statement by field observers said on Friday that the Sudanese government and the People's Liberation Army will renew a cease- fire agreement in al-Nouba mountain ( al-Wasat) which is due to expire by the end of July.

The statement which was issued by the joint mission for observation in charge of supervising the cease fire said that the government of Sudan and the People's Liberation Army agreed to extend the cease fire in al-Nouba mountains for an additional 6 months. The statement said that Khartoum green-lighted July 15 agreement to be renewed following a recommendation by the chairman of the mission Gen. Yan Irbik Wiblhelmson, while the People's Liberation Army gave its consent on July 4.

The agreement was signed in January in Switzerland following negotiations under the auspices of the UN. It includes the founding of a joint observation mission composed of a UN team and a military committee. The international team, according to the statement, is composed on 30 observers and experts from the US and several European states including France, Denmark, Germany and Britain.

However, the military committee is composed of 9 persons: three foreigners, three from the Sudanese government and three from the People's Liberation Army. Al-Nouba mountain in which 500,000 persons are living has been a stage since several years for several battles between the government forces and the rebels.
