Egyptian - Syrian coordination in light of current regional conditions
Syria-Egypt, Politics, 7/5/2002

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Thursday received the Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher.

The meeting was attended by the deputy premier and foreign minister Farouk al-Shara and the Egyptian ambassador in Damascus Muhammad Ahmad Ismael.

Maher conveyed to President al-Assad a message from President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt relating to consultations and coordination between the two states.

Discussions dealt with the next meeting of the Arab follow up committee and latest developments in the region.

In a statement to the press at the honorary hall at the Damascus International airport, Maher said that his visit to Damascus falls in the framework of coordination and continued consultations between the leaderships of the two states in Syria and Egypt. He indicated the need of continued contacts in light of developments taking place as a result of the continued Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.

Maher explained "due to the very nearby meeting of the Arab follow up committee President Mubarak asked me to convey to President Bashar al-Assad his assessment to latest developments so as the two countries stances will be coordinated and united."

Maher indicated that the arising problems in the region are the result of the Israeli occupation of the Arab territories and that a limit should be put to this Israeli occupation and for international resolutions to this effect to be implemented. For his part, al-Shara underlined the importance of the visit carried out by Maher to Syria in helping for more consultations and the exchange of views especially as the region is passing a crucial phase that requires a meeting as such.

Al-Shara also stressed that the deterioration of conditions in the region is shouldered by Israel because of its occupation of the Arab territories and continued attacks against the Palestinian people.

Replying to a question concerning the recent speech made by the US President George Bush, al-Shara said that this speech has several negative points, and this view is shared by others. He added that for the positive points in that speech they are scattered and in need of great efforts to be formulated so as to be an initiative, "otherwise, the road is still long and difficult."
