Al-Assad receives Farrakhan, learns of Muslims conditions in US; congress delegation

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday in Damascus received the delegation representing the US Congress led by Senator Bob Graham.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara and the US ambassador in Damascus Theodore Qattouf.

Discussions dealt with the tour carried out by the US congress delegation, its objectives and the importance that the delegation learn about issues directly from its sources in the region and not only from what the press says.

Discussions also dealt with regional issues which the president explained its political and social dimensions.

Al-Assad stressed the importance of initiating a dialogue on issues debated in the region and the need of reactivating this dialogue in order to know facts, noting that any such dialogue should stem from reciprocated dialogue.

The president stressed that Syria greatly realized the feelings of the American people as a result of September 11 events, noting that the important thing is to know reasons behind the occurrence of such events so as to be able not to have them repeated.

Concerning the negotiation process, the president said that Syria had responded to the peace initiative in Madrid, on the ground of its confidence in the UN resolutions and results that will be concluded from the Madrid conference, stressing Syria's commitment to peace and the return back of every and each inch of its occupied lands.

President al-Assad also received on Tuesday afternoon in Damascus Minister Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam leader in the USA and members of the accompanying delegation.

The president learnt from Farrakhan about his mission in the region and his impressions about the countries he had visited. The president also learned about the situations of Muslims in the USA and the need of joint Arab and Islamic work for the interests of the Arab and Islamic nations.
