Mubarak receives US Congressman; Bush's position supported by Congress
Egypt-USA, Politics, 7/2/2002
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Monday received member of the US House of representatives for Florida Robert Wexler and his accompanying delegation.
Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher attended the meeting and US ambassador in Cairo David Welch.
Wexler's visit falls within a tour that includes also Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian self-rule areas.
Wexler is a member of the house of representative international relations committee and sub-committee for the Middle East.
Emerging from the meeting, Wexler said he had discussed with President Hosni Mubarak the policy declared by U.S. President George W Bush in his recent speech as well as Mubarak's views and expectations in this respect.
Wexler added he had held talks in Saudi Arabia before coming to Egypt with Crown Prince Abdullah Ibn Abdul Aziz and Foreign Minister Prince Saudi Al-Faisal on reform steps by the Palestinian Authority.
Replying to a query on the US. Administration's insistence on changing the Palestinian leadership, the US official said the U.S. decision did not come from the administration only.
However, many congressmen support that trend as well, he said. Answering a question that the U.S. did not practice any pressures on Israel to stop its incursions into the Palestinian self-rule areas, Wexler said that Bush explained how he would deal with the current conditions in the region.
He added that once the Palestinian Authority (PA) started the reform process and chose a new leader so as to qualify them to the state that they deserves, the U.S.A. would support it with all potentials.
He noted that U.S. would back the Palestinians at all political, economic levels, and we expected that Ariel Sharon, Israeli Prime Minister, would respond to this.
Replying a question on U.S. linkage between September 11 incidents and the conditions in the Palestinian territories, Wexler said that bush's vision on the international conditions after September 11 has been unanimously approved.
