A political victory for the central government in Somalia
Somalia, Politics, 7/1/2002
The provisional government in Somalia has achieved a new political victory which is the greatest since its election more than two years ago at the Arta conference in Djibouti. This victory was made after annexing the administration of Pont Lant province " Southern- East " Somalia following three days of talks between the Somali Prime minister Hassan Abshar and the governor of " Pont Land" Jame' Ali Jame under the patronage of the government of Djibouti last month.
The agreement states cooperation between the two sides in the political, security and military areas. Sources close to the Somali government in Makadishu said that Libya and Djibouti played a great role in making the two sides reach the new agreement, according to which the new government in Makadishu has achieved a big stride in the national reconciliation process in Somalia. A reconciliation which stumbled many times as a result of the refusal of the warlords and leaders of the independent areas from making political negotiations that are conducive to national reconciliation.
Abshar, on the other hand, submitted a report on the agreement at the special meeting of the Somali cabinet in Makadishu in which he explained the details of the agreement and he described his visit to Djibouti as successful. The Cabinet, on the other hand, praised the efforts made by Djibouti to achieve peace in Somalia and described the agreement as historic.
