Israel starts building a fence around Jerusalem, to cancel liaison offices in the West Bank and Gaza
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 7/1/2002
The Israeli forces have officially launched work of constructing a "security fence" around Jerusalem with the aim of preventing the leak of the Palestinians who intend to carry out operations. This was just one day after these forces destroyed the "boycotting" building in Hebron over the Palestinian who are besieged inside following one week siege.
Meantime, news reports talked about the decision taken by the Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to abrogate the Palestinian- Israeli liaison offices as a prelude to impose the civil administration in the West Bank and Gaza.
Meantime, the Israeli radio said that a special Israeli unit assassinated a high ranking official in the military wing of the Hamas movement. The Palestinian described the man, who is Muhannad al-Taher, known as ( Engineer 4) as on top of the list of persons wanted by Israel.
The radio added that al-Taher is the leader of al-Qassam group in Nablus and that his men are responsible for killing more than 100 Israelis. In the same operation al-Taher assistant was also assassinated and a third person was wounded.
Eye- witnesses said the Israeli forces besieged the house of one of al-Taher's assistants in Nablus and asked the occupants of the house to leave it and then opened fire on the house.
The Israeli Defense Minister Benjamin Bin Aliazer inspected works which started several days ago in the settlement Jeilo quarters and Beit Jala town near Bethlehem. Bin Aliazer expressed satisfaction over these works.
The fence extends at the end ( lower part) of Jeilo at a distance of 100 meters. It will be provided by early warning electronic system and, observatory cameras implanted along it. The same fence is being also erected in the northern part of the West Bank. The total length of the fence around Jerusalem will be 50 Km.
The director general of the Israeli defense ministry Mous Yaroun said that the first part of the fence of 20 Km length will be completed within "three or four months."
