Mining sector sales up by 6.7 percent during three first months of 2002

The sales of the mining sector in Morocco, including phosphates and other processed mining products was worth 4.95 billion Dirhams (nearly US$ 450 million) during the first three months of 2002 compared to 4.64 billion DH during the same period in 2001, i.e. an increase of 6.7 percent.

Exports, worth 3.86 billion DH, represent 78 percent of the overall amount, says the ministry of industry, trade, energy and mining in its latest newsletter, adding that 87.5 percent of these exports are made up of phosphates and phosphates by-products.

By the end of March 2002, mining production amounted to 6.02 million tons where phosphates accounted for 94.6 percent with 5.70 million tons, compared to 5.69 million tons during the same period in 2001, i.e. an increase of 5.8 percent.

Production of metallic substances recorded a drop of 9.8 percent (81,870 tons to 90,758 tons in 2001), while the production of other substances, including anthracite scored an increase of nearly 32.5 percent going up from 181,704 tons to 240,676 tons. Sales of these substances increased by 20 percent to stand at 162,004 tons, worth 70 millions DH.

By the end of March 2002, production of processed minerals, other than phosphates by-products, increased by 23.5 percent compared to the same period last year (23,628 tons to 19,135 tons in 2001). Overall sales of these products amounted to 21,677 tons.
