Al-Rai al-Am: Russia refuse striking Iraq
Iraq-Russia, Politics, 6/29/2002

The director of the Middle East department at the Russian foreign ministry Mikhael Bughdanov renewed his country's total rejection to US striking Iraq., stressing that such a strike will have catastrophic results on the Iraqi people and all countries in the region.

In an exclusive statement to the Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am issued on Friday, the Russian official said that Iraq had committed to the UN resolutions and responded to the UN demands. A matter which makes it imperative not to direct a military strike against it.

He stressed the need of continued dialogue between Iraq and the UN, noting that Iraq has repeatedly expressed readiness to maintain dialogue. He said that the Russian foreign minister is continuously contacting the US secretary of state in order to revitalize this dialogue and considering it as a means to settle the problem.
