Al-Watan: AL chief may quit post
Regional, Politics, 6/29/2002
The Saudi daily al-Watan issued in Riyadh on Friday said the secretary general of the Arab League (AL) Amr Moussa might resign from his post because of the internal and external constraints imposed on him and under the continued financial crisis which is effecting the AL.
The paper quoted well-informed Arab sources in Abu Dhabi as saying that Moussa held contacts with certain Arab leaders informing them his intention to resign, noting that Moussa also did not find the necessary support from the Egyptian government in order to maintain the needed media and political move while the former AL chief Esmat Abdul Meguid used to have the direct support of President Hosni Mubarak.
The paper explained that Moussa's Arab contacts resulted only in paying the salaries of close aides to the AL chief while it failed to finance the media move programs which were agreed upon during the emergency meeting of the Arab ministers of information in 2001.
The paper added that Taher al-Msri who was appointed by Moussa as a commissioner general for political affairs stopped working because there were no financial deposits available him to continue working, while Hanan Ashrawi refused to work as a commissioner for media affairs for the AL because she did not get any money since one year.
The paper indicated that the AL is facing a drastic financial crisis that prevented payment of its workers since months and sums that had to be paid by the Arab states to the AL until May reached USD 60 million.
