Border centers following border demarcation between UAE, Oman
United Arab Emirates-Oman, Politics, 6/27/2002

Well-informed sources in Abu Dhabi said that the United Arab Emirates and Oman are studying alternatives for organizing border points between the two states after the completion of the international borders between them.

The sources stressed that among these alternatives is the establishment of joint border centers at the various crossing points along the international borders which extends until almost 1000 kilometers.

According to the sources the existence of joint border centers will solve a persisting security problem for the UAE which used not to have any border points with Oman. A situation which made it easy for the escape of many persons wanted through the land road to Oman and then to the outside the Gulf area before the UAE authorities cam reach them.

Worthy mentioning that because international borders were not demarcated between the two states and the intensive intermingling in various border areas prevented the UAE from founding special border centers, in contrary to Oman which had since a very long time established such centers of its own.

The sources said that border demarcation between the two states and installing special international crossing point for each state or establishing joint border centers will not obstruct land transport movement between the two states. A measure which is made by ID for the citizens of the two states while transit or tourism visa are granted to foreigners residents in the Gulf Cooperation Council member states upon their arrival at the border point.
