Morocco, Kuwait renew 1989 cooperation accord
Morocco-Kuwait, Politics, 6/18/2002
Morocco and Kuwait agreed to renew their 1989 cooperation accord and voiced satisfaction over the adoption and entry into force of two cooperation agreements on encouragement and protection of investment and on non-double taxation.
This came in the joint communique issued at the end of the first meeting of the high joint commission convened in Kuwait Saturday, under the co-chairmanship of the two states' foreign ministers.
The two sides called for promoting investments and exploring the opportunities offered in this respect and urged the private sector to contribute to enhancing bilateral cooperation, mainly in matters of economy and investment, said the Kuwaiti News agency, which reproduced the Joint communique, adding that the Moroccan party hailed the contribution of the Kuwaiti fund for the Arab Economic Development in carrying out development projects in Morocco.
The meeting probed cooperation prospects in the cultural and social realms as well as in the sectors of transport, telecommunication, media, tourism and youth and sports
At the Arab scale, the two sides voiced attachment and backing to the Arab peace initiative adopted during the latest Arab summit, held in Beirut in March 2002, and hailed the efforts being made at the international level to reach a fair settlement to the Middle East conflict.
Morocco and Kuwait, which voiced deep worry over the policy of violence adopted by Israel and which renewed total backing to the Palestinian people to recover their legitimate rights to independence and statehood, said a fair, comprehensive and lasting peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved unless Israel withdraws from all occupied Arab territories, including Al Quds, the Syrian Golan Heights and the Shabaa farms, and abides by the recommendations of the Madrid Conference and the land-for-peace principle.
The two states stressed the need for Iraq to undertake to respect the independence, sovereignty and security of Kuwait and called for a final settlement to the issue of Kuwaiti POWs. They also called for the respect of the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Iraq, hailing the latest Security Council resolution amending the sanctions imposed on Baghdad and voicing solidarity with the brotherly Iraqi people in the difficult juncture they are going through.
