A new inter- Sudanese negotiations round
Sudan, Politics, 6/18/2002

A new round of negotiations between the Sudanese government and the rebels supervised by IGAD started in the Kenyan capital- Nairobi. The negotiations will discuss the relations between the region and the state and the sharing of resources and authority in Sudan. The Sudanese government's delegation to the meeting is chaired by the Minister of State Idris Muhammad Abdul Qader and the negotiations will be attended by representatives for the US, Britain, Norway, Egypt and Libya.

On the other hand, the Sudanese former prime minister and the leader of the Umma party al-Sadeq al-Mahdi said the separation between northern Sudan and its southern part is impossible due to the geographical and humanitarian extension and the common and interrelated interests of the Sudanese people.

As for the Egyptian- Libyan initiative to end the conflict concerning Southern Sudan, al-Mahdi said in press statements that this initiative had made certain strides and several groups announced support to it but it was not implemented because it was opposed by several regional and international forces.

He said that his party supports this initiative and means for reactivating it and merging it with other initiatives so as to attain its set objective.
