Tragic situation of Moroccans jailed by Polisario at heart of talks in Geneva
Morocco, Politics, 6/14/2002
The situation of the Moroccan nationals sequestered in the Polisario camps in Tindouf (south-western Algeria) was at the centre of talks in Geneva Wednesday between Moroccan employment, vocational training, social development and solidarity minister, Abbas Al-Fassi, and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Ruud Lubbers.
Al-Fassi briefed Lubers on the evolution of the Moroccan Sahara issue. He laid a special emphasis on the inhumane and unacceptable conditions in which the sequestered Moroccans live.
"If the international community decides to destroy the barbed wire besieging the Tindouf camps, all Moroccans sequestered their will rush to Morocco, where they will live in peace and harmony," the minister told the U.N. Official.
Lubers said he was unhappy with the difficult humanitarian situation of the refugees in Tindouf. Financially, such situation is a burden for the United Nations and the HCR, he deplored.
Al-Fassi attended in Geneva the 90th session of the International Labour Conference.
