Mock-referendum on Sahara in Canary Islands, a shame, says Spanish political party
Morocco-Canary Islands, Politics, 6/13/2002
Spain's Popular Front for the independence of the Canary Islands (FREPIC-AWANAK) described Tuesday as "a shame" the holding this Wednesday of a mock-referendum on the Sahara that is meant to promote "schizophrenic" theses of a Spanish-Algerian organization that is acting against Spain's geo-political interests in the region.
The FREPIC-AWANAAK denounced in a statement "this initiative that kindles confrontation with Morocco, our closest neighbor" and says the project, financed by public funds, does not represent at all the opinion of the majority of the Canary Islands population. It is rather used by some parties, who have lost a long time ago all credibility, objectivity and ability to solve problems of the Canary populations, says the party.
