Arab telecom ministerial council holds session in Marrakesh
Regional, Economics, 6/12/2002

The council of Arab ministers of telecommunications will hold its 6th ordinary session in the Moroccan southern city of Marrakesh this June 13-14.

The ministers will examine inter-Arab cooperation in the field of telecommunications and information technologies, means to foster joint projects and consolidate the sector's infrastructures.

They will also probe means to set up an Arab network for information, data and pictures exchange, and enable rural areas to pick up state-of-the-art TV broadcasts.

The session will prospect the use of electronics in commerce and remote education, and how to reduce the digital divide, this item being on the agenda of the United Nations World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) to be held in Geneva (2003).

Secretary general of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Yoshio Utsumi, will be taking part in the session, to inform the Arab ministers on preparations underway for the Geneva summit and for ITU 16th plenipotentiary conference-- the union supreme decision-making authority-- to be held in Marrakesh September 23-October 18.

Relatedly Marrakesh is hosting as of Monday a two-day Arab preparatory meeting to the ITU plenipotentiary conference.

The preparatory meeting is examining the Arab position on the proposed restructuring of the ITU and Arab proposals on the union's strategy and election modes, and will draft a common declaration on the matter.

The meeting conclusions will be submitted to the Arab Telecom Ministerial Council.
