Morocco-France, Culture, 6/12/2002
The history of Moroccan coins is being displayed this June 7-15 at the initiative the French association for integration through cultures of origin.
The exhibition traces back the history of Moroccan coins since the first Dirham minted by Idriss 1st in Oualili in 753 (174 of the Hegira year) until the Alawit coins.
Several hundreds of coins in cold, silver and bronze are exhibited in their initial form (square, rectangle and diamond-shaped), bearing witness to the various changes in coins according to dynasties.
Visitors of the exhibition also have a chance to know that the founder of Muslim money workshops is the calif Abdelmalik Ibn Maroaune, who was the first to regulate the coins blending, caption, weight and discover historical documents showing that in 671 (92 of the Hegira year) the first Muslim dinars included caption in Latin letters, then in Arabic and Latin letters starting from 677 (98 of the Hegira year).
The major monetary reform in Morocco was started by Sultan Moulay Ismail who authorized the free circulation of foreign currencies inside Morocco.
