Spanish human rights association calls for dismissal of officials in Sebta and Melilia for minors rights violations
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 6/12/2002
A human rights-advocacy association in Andalusia (Southern Spain) has called for the dismissal of delegates of the Spanish central government and of the government's representatives in Sebta and Melilia (two Moroccan northern towns under Spanish occupation) over their responsibility in breaches of Moroccan minors' rights.
Chairman of "Pre Derechos Humanos" (APDH-A), Rafael Lara, told "La Verdad" daily said a report by the United Nations committee on children rights has confirmed once again that the rights of Moroccan children in the two cities have been violated and the Spanish justice has been inactive on ill-treatments inflicted to the minor migrants in the two occupied cities.
He further brushed aside as "absurd" statements by officials that the UN report does not conform to reality.
The report published recently expressed "deep concerns" over the living conditions of Moroccan minors in the two cities' shelters and over reports of ill-treatment practices inflicted by the Spanish police on children who are expelled back home without enjoying legal assistance nor translation services.
The committee was also worried over reports that Moroccan minors are denied access to healthcare and education and recommended that Spanish central authorities supply to the local authorities in the two cities the needed financial and human resources to take care of the children and take all measures to prevent illegal procedures against these children when they are driven back to their home country.
