Sudan, Politics, 6/12/2002

The rebels of the people's army for the liberation of Sudan announced on Tuesday the killing of some 200 Sudanese government soldiers during the fight to control the city of Kabotya to the south of Sudan on Sunday.

The movement's chairman Col. John Garang told several journalists that the battles resulted in killing more than 200 soldiers in the lines of the government's forces including the leader of this force in the area.

Garang was talking from an area that overlooks Kabotya city, 80 Km to the north of the borders with Kenya.

Garang continued that his forces also arrested 28 persons including the doctor of the force. He said his forces lost 13 members who were killed and 38 wounded. He said that this battle is a heavy blow to the government and a great victory for the people's movement for the liberation of Sudan.
