Sudanese army losses a strategic city
Sudan, Politics, 6/11/2002
In a statement issued by the Sudanese dailies on Monday, the Sudanese army admitted it had lost the strategic southern Sudanese city of Kaboyta following violent battles with the rebels of Southern Sudan and thereby confirming what was announced two days earlier by the separatists of John Garang.
On Sunday, the rebels of the people's front for the liberation of Sudan announced they were able to control the city of Kaboyta which is situated, 80 km from the borders with Kenya.
Meantime, a relief source indicates that the city has been taken over several times by one side and then the other during the several past years.
The rebels considered their control of the city as their greatest victory in two years and by that they have actually controlled the southern border area of Sudan.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese ambassador in Washington Khuder Haroun said in a message he sent last Wednesday to the chairman of the foreign relations committee at the US Congress Henry Hide, on the occasion of convening a session on the Sudanese question that "those who try to depict the war in southern Sudan as a religious war between Muslims and Christians, are mistaken," noting that " 4 to 5.5 million southern Sudanese people who evacuated the south headed to the north and settled in the area controlled by the government."
