Only fair, comprehensive solution can establish peace in middle east, king Mohammed
Morocco-Palestine, Politics, 6/10/2002
Morocco's King Mohammed VI reasserted Friday that peace in the Middle East can only be established through a fair and comprehensive solution, guaranteeing the Palestinians' right to an independent state, with Al Quds as a capital.
This came in a message the sovereign addressed to the international conference on the protection of Islamic and Christian shrines in Palestine, held in Rabat June 7-8 by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO/based in Rabat).
King Mohammed VI said if the Israeli aggressions and provocative acts continue, the situation may worsen and all peace hopes will fade away.
King Mohammed VI, who chairs Al Quds Committee emphasized the importance he grants to the protection of Islamic and Christian holy shrines in Palestine, and liberation of the Israel occupied Palestinian territories.
The king warned against the destruction, obliteration or distortion of the religious monuments and historical patrimony in the Occupied Palestinian territories, and deplored the continued Israeli aggressions.
King Mohammed VI denounced the destructive policy started by Israel since 1948 with the shelling of Al-Aqsa mosque and continued with the occupation of the holy city of Al-Quds in 1967, and the desecration and arson of the Al-Aqsa mosque in 1969. The sovereign who called these acts "painful events" recalled the excavations conducted by Israel in the holy city, the belt of settlements built all around the city and its isolation from neighboring cities and villages, in addition to expropriation of Arab property.
"These are all criminal acts that are condemned by international law and rejected by international legality," the sovereign said recalling the relevant UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions as well as the resolutions of the UNESCO and other international fora.
King Mohammed VI urged participants to highlight the place of the holy Islamic and Christian shrines in Palestine, denounce the painful situation entailed by the Israeli occupation and to draw attention to present and future dangers looming on these shrines.
The king called Muslims and Christians around the world to shoulder their responsibility and fulfil their role in preserving their shared religious heritage, saying such a stand would foster the international community's awareness of the need to safeguard the holy shrines in Palestine and shield them against destruction and profanation acts.
King Mohammed VI asserted further that the painful events endured by the valiant Palestinian people for months cannot divert the Palestinians from their goal and weaken their resolve to face up all criminal attempts to continue the judaization and profanation of the holy shrines in Palestine,
