Iraqi opposition groups discuss in Washington means of toppling the president

Representatives for four opposition Iraqi groups on Friday visited the headquarters of the US State Department in Washington and held talks centered on means of toppling the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

The spokesman for the US State Department Philip Reeker said that the US under secretary of state for political affairs MarcÊGrossman received the delegation of the Iraqi opposition with officials in the Middle East department at the State Department.

The delegation includes representatives for the Kurdistan Democratic Party-Iraq, the Kurdistani national federation; the higher council for the Islamic revolution in Iraq which is the main Shiite opposition stationed in Iran, and the national reconciliation movement.

Reecker said this meeting comes in the context of the US commitment to work with the largest possible part of the Iraqi opposition including these organizations attending the meeting in order to discuss the constructive role they can play in the interests of the Iraqi people.

The representative of the higher council of the Islamic revolution in Iraq Hamid al- Bayati* announced he will meet together with the representatives of the other three groups with other officials at the US State Department on Monday in order to discuss arrangements for convening a conference for the Iraqi opposition under the supervision of the US State Department.

Last Tuesday, the US State Department said it will start preparations for this conference but the date and place for convening it have not been fixed yet. However, sources at the Iraqi opposition spoke of the stumbled preparations concerning it.

It is also scheduled that the Iraqi opposition delegation will take part next Saturday in a seminar on Iraq at the American University in Washington. The US State Department said it has no relations with this seminar.

The US administration had placed Iraq on top of the "Axis of Evil" list and is working to support the Iraqi opposition inside and outside Iraq in order to topple the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
