Egyptian monuments exhibition to open in Washington on June 25
Egypt-USA, Culture, 6/1/2002
Egyptian Culture Minister Farouk Hosni will inaugurate in the US capital Washington on June 25 an exhibition of ancient Egyptian monuments under the fitting title "The Search for Immortality."
Washington's National Museum of Art, the largest and most famous in the U.S., will be the first of 13 museums in a number of U.S. states and Canadian provinces to host, for six weeks, to priceless relics of the Ancient Egyptian civilization which will fly out on a five-year tour of the modern world.
A valuable treasure of 143 exceptionally beautiful pieces, exuding the fragrance of Egypt in olden times, is not, however, without its practical side, as Zahi Hawas, the Secretary General of the Higher Council for Antiquities, cites millions of dollars in proceeds from showcasing the ancient artifacts in world museums.
Thirteen million U.S. dollars will go into the council coffers from this trip, that is one million dollars levied on each exhibiting museum, according to Hawas.
The money will be used repairing and developing in archaeological sites in Egypt.
Also, the exhibition will lend a helping hand in restoring the number of American tourists to Egypt to the previous rates before the September 11 incidents.
Two pieces of the collection will be on show only at the inauguration ceremony before returning back home; the sarcophagus of Aa Hotb, the mother of King Ahmus, whose fame was established after driving out the Hixus from Egypt; and the stone coffin of Ring Khensu, the son of King Sengem, one of the most renowned monarchs of Ancient Egypt.
