Maghreb union, an irreversible choice, Tunisian, Mauritanian pms
Maghreb, Politics, 6/1/2002

Tunisian and Mauritanian prime ministers, Mohamed El Ghannouchi and Sheikh El Afia Ould Mohammed Khouna stressed in Tunis Thursday that "the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) is an irreversible strategic choice."

Speaking at the opening of the 11th session of the Tunisian-Mauritanian high joint commission, Tunisia's premier voiced hope that the UMA upcoming summit will mark a qualitative turning point in the Maghreban joint action, and stressed that "the Union is an irreversible strategic choice."

The Mauritanian prime minister said "the UMA countries are driven by a shared feeling that the union is an inevitable choice."

Tunisia-Mauritania cooperation is an essential basis in the construction of the Maghreb Union, El Afia added.

Tunisia and Mauritania are together with Algeria, Morocco and Libya members to the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) set up in 1989.
