Moroccan speaker meets German state secretary
Morocco-Germany, Politics, 6/1/2002
Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives (lower chamber), Abdelouahed Radi, met in Rabat Thursday German state minister in charge of foreign affairs, Christoph Zopel, who is currently visiting Morocco.
The two men lauded the excellent Morocco-Germany ties and underscored the will of the two countries' officials to foster them further, the House of Representatives said.
Radi and Zopel discussed a set of international issues of common interest, particularly security and stability in the Mediterranean basin, and Europe's stand in the Middle East conflict.
The Moroccan speaker said Israel's arrogance and its occupation of the Palestinian territories are the main obstacle facing any peaceful settlement, and voiced the Arab states' hope that decisions of the Beirut Summit and the Arab peace initiative be backed by Europe.
Zopel said Europe's openness on the Arab-Islamic world will contribute to bringing about peace and stability in the region, and set up balanced relations between the two parties.
The Arab peace initiative, floated by Saudi Arabia at the Beirut Summit, offers Israel normal relations with Arab states in exchange of a withdrawal to the pre-1967 borders.
