Syria assumes today the presidency over the UN security council
Syria-Regional, Politics, 6/1/2002
Syria today assumed the rotating presidency of the UN security council for the first time since almost 32 years.
In January this year Syria joined the UN security council 15 member states for a period of time which lasts for two years. Syria will run the UN Security Council during June before it will hande the presidency to Britain in the first of July. Syria, the only Arab member at the council this year that used its seat during the five past months to keep the pressure on Israel concerning its incursions in the cities of the West Bank.
On behalf of the Palestinians and the Arab states, the Syrian ambassador to the UN Mikhael Wahba pressed for the release of a series of resolutions by the UN Security Council condemning the Israeli practices in being "war crimes and mass slaughter" and his proposals in certain times were stronger than what even the Palestinians or other Arab diplomats wanted.
Member of the Syrian mission to the UN Faisal Miqdad said: "we are interested in all issues." He added that the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara may visit New York this month in order to preside over certain sessions of the UN Security Council. Syria was a member in the UN security council in 1970.
