Mubarak praises activities of International Farmers Federation
Regional-Egypt, Economics, 5/31/2002

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak praised the activities of the international farmers federation, saying Egypt is closely following up the activities of the federation, founded in 1946, the same date the FAO was established in Rome.

In his address to the International Farmers Conference, read out on his behalf by Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Mahmoud Abu-Zeid, President Mubarak hailed the great role played by the Federation in defending the rights of farmers and in modernizing agriculture and promoting exchange of hi-technology.

The President asserted concern with development in the field of agriculture and rural development and keenness on enhancing cooperation relations with African and third world countries.

The issue of rural poverty is considered the greatest challenge facing the developing world, he said, asserting the importance of reaching an international strategy for the poor in the countryside through which they could develop their production and human resources.

He said everyone is looking forward to a more just and secure world in which all people would feel free and the resources directed for destruction and war would be shifted to the establishment of farms, factories and schools.

Peace is a part and parcel of our strategies to build the society, he said, adding that efforts to establish just peace in the Middle East and the entire world will never stop.

Peace provides security and builds confidence, he added and reiterated the need to direct all powers to economic and social development. Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Mahmoud Abu Zeid opened on Wednesday the 35th World Farmer's Conference. Representatives of farmers from 64 countries are taking part in the three-day conference.

The conference will discuss rural poverty, sustainable development, food security, World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations and agricultural industries.

Mohamed Idris, Head of the Central Agricultural cooperative federation, expressed President Hosni Mubarak's interest in sustainable agricultural development and improving environmental conditions.

Head of the International Federation for Agricultural development expressed the federation's desire to achieve economic, social and agricultural development in the rural areas and get farmers out of poverty life.

The inaugural session was attended by Supply Minister Hassan khader, Secretary General of the Arab Economic Unity Council Ahmed Goweili as well as other officials.

Participants in the 35th world farmers' conference presented President Hosni Mubarak with the shield of the International Federation of Farmers at the opening of the international event Wednesday. The Shield was handed over to Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mahmoud Abu Zeid by the federation's chief.

The conference will issue the "Giza statement'' for the protection of farmers and the realization of agricultural development in the whole world.
