Mubarak receives German opposition leader
Egypt-Germany, Politics, 5/31/2002
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak met at the presidential headquarters in Heliopolis Wednesday with German Free Democratic Party (FDP) Chief and Leader of the Opposition in the Bundestag Guido Westerwelle who is currently visiting Egypt as part of a tour of the region.
After the meeting, Westerwelle said his hour-long talks with Mubarak covered the Middle East issue.
He added that he briefed Mubarak on the outcome of the meetings he held with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat over the past two days.
He said he came out with an impression that all sides want to achieve peace in the region.
He expressed opposition to the belief that the Middle East peace process can go on without Arafat.
This is an unstudied vision because a regional peace process without Arafat is unimaginable.
Asked whether the German policy will witness any changes towards the Middle East issue, he said German's stance towards the Middle East issue is clear.
Israel has the right to exist and the Palestinians also have the right to have a state of their own within secured borders. The meeting was attended by the German charge D'affaires in Cairo.
