Egypt's ambassador to US stresses importance of Mubarak's Washington visit

Egypt's ambassador to the US Nabil Fahmi underlined the importance of President Hosni Mubarak's projected visit to Washington in the light of the dangerous situation in the occupied Palestinian lands.

In an exclusive interview with Cairo radio Wednesday morning, ambassador Fahmi said that contacts are held on daily basis through the diplomatic channels by the Egyptian embassy and between the two sides' officials to prepare for the Egyptian -American summit.

He said that talks between Presidents Mubarak and George Bush would deal specifically with Middle East peace and the Palestinian -Israeli conflict at this very critical stage.

He underlined that re-occupying the Palestinian lands under any pretext cannot be accepted.

He said that the present situation is a result of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian lands.

It is an issue of occupation that must be politically tackled, he added.

He said that Egypt's firm stances and viewpoints will be reiterated during the talks, President Mubarak will also present an Egyptian assessment of the present situation and steps that ought to be taken, he added.

He said that the visit is not traditional and is basically linked to the peace process.

He added that the visit is at a new invitation from President Bush as President Mubarak had visited the US less than a couple of months ago.

President Mubarak's talks will focus on the peace process but will also deal with some other issues, he said.
