Moroccan premier calls Socialist International to slam Israel
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 5/31/2002

Moroccan Premier, Abderrahmane Youssoufi and vice president of the Socialist International (SI), called on this organization to slam Israel during the meeting of its council May 31-June 1 in Casablanca.

"The SI cannot remain heedless to the ordeals of the Palestinian people," said Youssoufi, first secretary of the Moroccan Socialist Union of Popular Forces.

"The SI should loudly express its firm condemnation of the Israeli violations of the Palestinian people's rights," he said.

The Council of the International will have the issue of advancing peace and security high on its agenda when it meets in Casablanca.

Delegates will examine areas of great international concern, including the Middle East, the Great Lakes Region of Africa, Central and South Asia and Colombia. Representatives of member parties from the respective areas will address the participants.

The Council, hosted by the USFP, will also discuss the theme "From Monterrey to Johannesburg," considering the elements of improving world governance, ensuring sustainable development, promoting economic growth, and supporting the New Partnership for Africa's Development.

Morocco, which has previously been the venue of other SI meetings, will host the Council for the first time.
