Rabat, Damascus determined to up ties
Syria-Morocco, Politics, 5/31/2002

The official visit King Mohammed VI to Syria is seen as a sign of the will of Rabat and Damascus to enhance their cooperation ties.

Beyond its significance for bilateral cooperation, the Moroccan King's visit to Syria is also perceived as important for cementing Arab ranks in the service of pan-Arab causes, particularly the Palestinian one.

Syria will be a second leg of a Middle East tour by King Mohammed VI. The king already visited Jordan and will head, after Syria, to Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Economic and commercial ties between Morocco and Syria have witnessed a tangible bond since the enthronement of King Mohammed VI in Morocco and the coming to power of President Bashar Al-Assad in Syria. However, these ties are still short of the political relations binding the two states.

In 2001, bilateral reached 305 million Moroccan dirhams, with a trade balance slightly in favour of Morocco.

Syrian prime minister, Mustapha Miro, says King Mohammed VI's visit to Syria "is a land mark event" in view of the regional and international situation.

"The visit will give a new impetus to bilateral cooperation and will surely be crowed with tangible results for the promotion of Moroccan-Syrian relations and hence for inter-Arab ties," Miro told MAP news agency.

Morocco's ambassador to Syria, Mohamed Faraj Doukkali, shares the same view.

Moroccan-Syrian relations were given a strong boost following the visit Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad paid to Morocco in April 2001, Doukkali told MAP.

King Mohammed VI's visit will further consolidate the new trend of Moroccan-Syrian relations.
