Jordan releases three Hizbullah party detainees
Jordan-Lebanon, Politics, 5/31/2002
The secretary general of the Hizbullah party Hassan Nasrullah has announced the release of the three detainees form the Hizbullah party in Jordan who arrived in Beirut on Wednesday at ( 7 p.m. local time ).
Nasrullah made a telephone call with the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud and thanked him for the efforts exerted especially by the Lebanese ministry of the interior and the general directorate for public security which yielded in a positive response from the Jordanian side in releasing the three detainees, according to a statement broadcast by the Hizbullah party on Wednesday evening.
Worthy mentioning that the Jordanian authorities arrested the three persons (including Youssef al-Jouni) in 2001 while attempting to deploy "Katyusha" missiles to the West Bank via the Jordanian borders in order to support the Palestinian Intifada. Intensive contacts were made with the Jordanian side in which high ranking Lebanese officials took part with Jordanian officials for releasing them. Through these contacts the Jordanian side was convinced not to bring the three Hizbullah members before the court, rather put them in "reserve custody" until they were freed on Wednesday.
