Wali to read out Mubarak speech to 35th int'l Farmers Conference

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has deputized Deputy Premier and Minister of Agriculture Youssef Wali to read out on his behalf a speech before the 35th international farmers conference on Wednesday.

Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mahmoud Abu Zeid, Secretary General of the Arab Economic Unity Ahmed Guweili, Chairman of the Central Agricultural Cooperation Union Mohammed Idriss, who doubles as head of the African farmers' union, as well as representatives of farmers organizations and unions from 64 countries will take part in the conference.

Mohammed Idriss will address the opening session of the conference on the role of agricultural cooperatives in realizing agrarian development in Egypt.

He pointed out that the conference would discuss the issue of regional economic integration, the role of farmers' organizations and a number of reports on sustainable development and food security presented by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Food and Agriculture organization (FAO) and the International Labour organization (ILO).

Following Mubarak address to the opening session, to be read out on his behalf by Minister Wali, the Chairman of the International Federation for Agricultural Producers and then Secretary-General of the Arab Economic Unity Council (AEUC) Ahmed Guweili will present a report on regional economic integration and the role of farmers' organizations in the agricultural development process.

The three-day conference will tackle a number of working papers on the future aspects of agricultural development in Egypt in light of the economic reform policies, globalization challenges, economic blocs and competition and their impact on agricultural cooperation in Africa, Asia and other regions, as well as the modern technologies used in agriculture and means of increasing crop productivity.
