Mrs. Mubarak chairs meeting of Egyptian Red Crescent Society
Egypt, Culture, 5/30/2002

Egypt's Fist Lady Suzanne Mubarak chaired a meeting of the board of directors of the Egyptian Red Crescent Society at its new headquarters at the Cairo suburban Nasr City.

Mrs. Mubarak also opened the new headquarters of the Egyptian Red Crescent Society and made a tour of the six-storey building.

She said she is proud of the Society's activities and its way of developing and updating itself ever since its establishment 90 years ago.

The Society's meeting reviewed the assistance offered to the Palestinian` people.

In statements on Tuesday, Information Minister Safwat AL Sherif, member of the board of directors, said Mrs. Mubarak thanked all people who contributed to the construction of the Society's new premises.

She also appreciated the role played by the Society Secretary-General Mamdouh Jabr for the efforts he exerted inside and abroad, stressing that the achievements realized by the Society were based on cooperation between the government and nongovernmental organizations and donor countries.

El-Sherif added that Mrs. Mubarak asked for a study to assess the needs of the Society in the various governorates.

She highlighted the importance for the new generations to participate in the Society's activities.

Mrs. Mubarak has always enjoyed foresight as regards the projects of blood donations and organization of 42 rescue teams that were formed before the 1992 earthquake that jolted Cairo and other parts of Egypt, Jabr said.

Jabr said the Society has transferred a sum of $ 3.5 million as a first dispatch to the Palestinian Red Crescent and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

It also was able to transport 300 tons of foodstuffs, six tons of medicines and medical equipment and six ambulances to the Palestinian territories in a historic march led by Mrs. Mubarak.

The Society had also offered $ two million in assistance to the Palestinian people in 2001, Jabr said.

The workers of the Society also contributed to delivering 300 tons of food and medical assistance gathered by students at the American University in Cairo (AUC) to the Palestinian Authority, he added.

The Society's Secretary-General also said the UNHCR approved the dispatch of 1,500 tons of foodstuffs in batches over the coming two months presented by a number of businessmen in Cairo.

He said the Society's board decided to continue receiving funds for the Palestinians at its premises in Cairo and the various governorates.
