Morocco, Politics, 5/30/2002
The Moroccan Assahra Al-Maghribya (Moroccan Sahara) reported Wednesday that demonstrations has been rocking the separatists camps in Tindouf (south-western Algeria, stronghold of the Polisario) to claim return to the homeland, Morocco.
The demonstrations, which have been staged since the disclosure of a proposal by Algeria to partition the Moroccan Sahara, express the demonstrators' anger at the separatists' schemes, the daily said.
The Polisario security services kidnapped Mahmoud Ould Bakkar following a demonstration in Tindouf last week, said the daily, adding that the inhabitants of the "Dakhla camp" in Tindouf barred a British convoy and prevented it from entering the camps. Angered by the protest movement, the Polisario leadership punished several demonstrators.
According to the daily, the Algerian military security is infiltrating the camps persons to take part in a projected congress of the Polisario next August. The congress is expected to elect a new leadership and approve a political program axed on backing the Algerian proposal to partition the Moroccan southern provinces.
