Regional-Morocco, Judicial, 5/30/2002

Pr. Youssef Kettani, a Moroccan scholar, has called for the creation of a pan-Islamic jurisprudence academy to be in charge of interpreting Islam teaching in the new era marked by increasing challenges.

The creation of the academy has become a paramount necessity in view of the challenges posed by the revolution in new information technology particularly cloning, Kettani told the 15th International Conference of Islamic Unity, held in the Iranian capital city of Tehran.

Kettani, a professor at the Shariaa (Islamic Law) Faculty of Fez, proposed that the academy have full-time members, devoting all their time to looking into the challenges posed, particularly those harming human and religious values.

The proposed academy can be based in Mekkah (Saudi Arabia), cradle of Islam, or in any other Muslim city to be chosen, he said.

The academy will be managed by a president and a commission that will be elected every two years, he said, proposing that each Muslim country creates a branch of the academy on its territory to come up with a harmonious network.

The Tehran conference was attended by renowned Scholars coming from all the corners of land of Islam to debate modern issues posed to the Muslim religion.
