Iraqis are suffering from the high deduction rate of compensation claims; call for temporary halt
Iraq, Politics, 5/30/2002
Due to the catastrophic conditions the Iraqi people suffer under the sanctions since 12 years and because a percentage of its oil revenues is being deducted, Iraq has renewed its call on the UN to halt these deductions -- specified to compensate claims as a result of the second Gulf war estimated at 30% of total revenues -- for five years in order to allow Iraq to meet the basic needs of the Iraqi people.
In statements issued on Wednesday by the Iraqi daily al-Rafeydeen (the two tributaries, Tigris and the Euphrates ), an official source at the Iraqi foreign ministry said that Iraq also noted its reservation on the resolutions taken by the UN special committee on compensation, which also holds Iraq responsible for compensating for damages inflicted on the environment without assuring that Iraq is legally responsible for that.
Iraq has also officially notified the UN its rejection of financial requests to compensate for psychological and mental pains and stressed that this issue falls beyond the confines of international law and the aim is to continue inflicting damage on Iraq and subjugating it to restrictions which have no grounds in international relations.
