Israel extends detention for Barghouthi
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 5/30/2002
The Israeli military court on Wednesday extended the detention period of Marwan Barghouthi -- the secretary general of the Palestinian Fatah movement in the West Bank -- for another 22 days under the pretext of completing investigations with him.
Jawad Poulos, the lawyer of Barghouthi said in a statement to the Israeli radio on Wednesday that Barghouthi denied in a close door trial session held with him on Wednesday at "Beit Takahfa" settlement, accusations against him in being involved in operations against Israel.
The lawyer indicated that the court refused to release Barghouthi and extended his detention despite the immunity he enjoys as a member in the Palestinian authority.
